AutoMKV

So, as some people may have heard through recent PMs with me over MSN, Skype, YIM, I have been exploring ways to back up my DVD content to my computer network. See, I’m not very good with discs, they usually end up being all scratched up. I went through many applications used for ripping DVDs before I settled on AutoMKV. Why did I choose this? Because, for the amount of space I want my movies to take up, around 700MB, I want the movie to look decent, not perfect, but decent, as well as sound decent. I highly recommend you check it out. Below are some comparison pictures:

The Simpsons Movie – aXXo XviD DVD Rip.
The Simpsons Movie – AutoMKV H264 DVD Rip.

They may look the same, quality-wise, but keep in mind the difference in sizes and color. The AutoMKV version is brighter, AND it preserved the original source video’s size. Audio quality was good too, considering AutoMKV has the option to copy the source audio stream from the DVD. Though getting a video this good takes a lot of time, this movie took somewhere around 7 hours for AutoMKV to do on this desktop which has a 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo and 2GB of RAM, and that is because I did want to keep to the original size but keep it at 700MB max filesize, I also had the quality filter set to “Insane Quality”. If anyone is wondering, no, I do not upload any DVDs I rip, they are for personal backup/archival purposes only.
